It is a light independent process in which the products of the light reaction (i.e., ATPs) are used to form carbon-carbon covalent bonds of carbohydrates. When ATP releases its energy, a phosphoric acid radical is split away and adenosine diphosphate (ADP) is formed, and the vice versa reaction takes place when ATP is formed
Cellular Respiration
This has strengthened the theory that mitochondria are the evolutionary descendants of a bacterium that established an endosymbiotic relationship with the ancestors of eukaryotic cells early in the history of life on earth. (Defects in either process can produce serious, even fatal, illness.) The Outer Membrane The outer membrane contains many complexes of integral membrane proteins that form channels through which a variety of molecules and ions move in and out of the mitochondrion
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1997 Three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1997 for their work studying enzymes involved with the formation and use of ATP. This "lost" energy allows for the pumping of hydrogen ions against the concentration gradient (there are fewer hydrogen ions outside the confined space than there are inside the confined space)
Photosynthesis
These high-energy electrons will be used in the Calvin Cycle to reduce CO2 to make sugars The H+ is pumped into the thylakoid membrane to generate an H+ gradient (i.e. Each arrow in the diagram above actually represents a reaction like this one: Each element in the pathway is reduced by the electrons, and turns right around to reduce its neighbor in the pathway by giving it the electrons, thus becoming reoxidized and ready for the next electrons to pass through the photosystem H+ Pumping
The electron transport system transfers protons from the inner compartment to the outer; as the protons flow back to the inner compartment, the energy of their movement is used to add phosphate to ADP, forming ATP. Water flows across the respiratory surface of the gill in one direction while blood flows in the other direction through the blood vessels on the other side of the surface
Lesson SummaryIn this lesson, we've learned how the dark reactions or the Calvin cycle use carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, as well as ATP and NADPH from the light reactions, to make sugar. Photosynthesis
In the daytime, when the light reaction is occurring and ATP is available (but the stomates must remain closed), they take the CO2 from these organic compounds and put it into the Calvin cycle. Chlorophyll and several other pigments such as beta-carotene are organized in clusters in the thylakoid membrane and are involved in the light reaction
Calvin Cycle
So while the "traditional" product of photosynthesis is a sugar, we have to keep in mind that a sugar is a versatile material in the biochemical context of a plant cell! More of that below. Clearly the need for ATP and NADPH will put the Calvin cycle on the stroma side of the thylakoid membrane where these high-energy molecules are produced by the light reactions

The ATP - ADP Cycle
Metabolic proceses can be separated into two phases; catabolism is the process of breaking down (breaking down food to make ATP), and anabolism is the process of building up (using the energy created in converting ATP to ADP to build up cells or move molecules around the cell).
