You tried reinstalling Windows 7 but the problem persists? If you have the disc (which by the sounds of it you do), I suggest you boot to that disc again and go to Recovery Options, once in there, choose Command Prompt. I tried to do some of the following of what I had read from other websites: 1.) Tapping the F8 button a few times at dell logo screen to get to safe mode to access system recovery and restore (Didn't work I only have F2 and F12 functions at start screen) 2.) Turning on and off the computer to get to safe mode (Didn't work) 3.) Removed the battery and pressed and held down the power button for 30 seconds, replace the battery and turn on the computer (Didn't work) 4.) At the Dell logo screen pressed F12 function key, ran diagnostics, and it reads hard drive failure

i usually just hold the power button down until it shuts down, then i press the power button again, and then it makes it past the black screen to windows start up screen. I have a Dell Dimension E520 with Vista (this is all I know sorry, not great with computers!) I had previous problems due to my ITunes not responding and my Internet Explorer and I have fixed the ITunes problem

Here is my problem: At boot-time, I see windows XP load screen with the progress bar, the progress bar advances to the end and then, the screen turns pitch black and all is see is an arrow cursor I can move around. I thought until yesterday that this was a permanent freeze-up, but if I wait, say, 6 minutes, the black screen disappears and windows then starts normally

did you reset the bios to defaults? Even if you originally only had the default settings, choose the option to restore the defaults and to save them and reboot. BSOD Help and Support black screen, blinking cursor @ clean installHello all, I upgraded to win7 two weeks ago, and yesterday I started having some trouble: When playing cod4 the computer froze

The last hard drive failure I had was a seagate HD that failed after 49500 hours ( is that a normal lifespan for a hard drive ) Based upon your comment I also tried to run spin rite, but I can get the computer to boot to the windows xp disc, but not to the spin rite disc, ( it keeps saying try f1 to reboot or f2 for set up utility.) I have changed the boot order in the BIOS to boot to the cd rom drive first so I dont understand why it will boot no problem to the xp disc but not to spin rite. You will probably have better luck using a linux live cd or removing the hard drive from your computer and placing it in a different working computer to retrieve the files

ORyou can also use it to backup your data to a internal drive or external usb hard drive..just have it hooked to the computer when you boot up with puppy... I shut it down and restarted and a dos style like program chkdsk program popped up before i got to xp startup screen one day asking me if i wanted to run it (I was kind of heistant to run it, fake chkdsk virus?) so i did it took about a half hour to complete and said something about changing orpaned files and a bunch of other files.Ever since I ran this i cant get into xp.f2 and f12 are the only options i can get into.I cannot get into safe mode or the screen that says reset to the best known config, which I would love to right about now.I have tried windows repair cd done everything on that and it just shows the blinking cursor again

My laptop has that handy wi-fi disconnect switch that makes that easy to do...I simply turn it to OFF, close my desktop widgets, then reboot. As it turned out, one of my new clients is a software programmer. But the IE 7 freeze-up and the blackscreen issues still continue.Bob had insisted that I needed to remove my USB flash stick, as it was the cause of the problem

Computer Has a Black Screen in Windows and Will Not Boot or Start Up - Tips4pc

Do you have any suggestions as to what has happened or how to fix this problem please? Mitz says November 3, 2010 at 9:37 am Hi Claire Have you restarted your computer? Is that when it is a black screen with a cursor? I would put your operating system cd in and do a repair. No beeps, no cursor, no logo screen, and no choice to boot to safe mode or access the bios.If your computer will not boot up and you get a beep sequence, I am not saying it is good news, however it is a step in the right direction towards solving this problem

The customer expressed that they needed the computer back quickly, so with the interest of getting her computer back as quickly as possible, I went ahead and backed up all of her data and am currently reinstalling Windows. My keyboard wouldn't function any longer and I have to manually turn the computer off and back on to boot to a CD whereas before, I could simply Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart

Then try to transfer my programs and data.2) Get a less than 137GB drive (probably 120GB) and re-install Windows XP-Pro, then try to transfer my programs and data (as Transfusion suggests). My questions (and challenges) are now this. It would be ideal to take the Hard Drive out, put it into another computer, back up your data, and use that computer to run EASEUS Partition Manager, resize your partitions, and you are set to go.EDIT-I was all enthusiastic until I thought of my experience with a CompaQ Evo n400c (2003)
