Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
This occurs because command shell scripts do not support parentheses in path variables, which can occur when installing 32-bit components to the Windows on Windows (WOW64) 32-bit subsystem on a 64-bit computer. Integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server Express makes it easy to develop powerful, secure, data-driven applications and deploy them quickly
windows 7 - Is it possible to enable Intellisense for SQL Server Management Studio Express 2012 (SSMS)? - Super User
It even integrates with Notepad (and Notepad++) - how cool is that? Please note I'm not affiliated with them in any way whatsoever, I'm just that impressed with the product... You can download a 14-day trial here: Red-Gate SQL Prompt Homepage Another tool is SQL Complete from Devart That said, Intellisense should work with SQL 2008 and of course SQL 2012
ssms - Where is SQL Server Management Studio 2012? - Stack Overflow
It's only about 60 MB, and since it's an .MSI you can probably provision it to be installed automatically (say for a large lab or classroom environment). I realise that common advice is to install SQL Server before Visual Studio, but I really don't want to uninstall Visual Studio, as this will bring a host of other problems

If you want to use previous versions (currently 2012 SP2 and 2014 SP1), they've made it easier to find and download (see this page), but much of the below will still apply. Anyway, I found the link by searching - the hint to not jumping through hoops set up by Microsoft marketing or MSDN is to look for the page with download in the URL: This brings me here, where I click Download: Then pick either the 32-bit or 64-bit version, depending on your platform, and click Next: And success
windows - Trying to install SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express - Database Administrators Stack Exchange
(when installing, I would select Express Edition) No luck, when trying to run setup.exe I get the following errors: This program has known compatability issues. Then I click n "Check for solutions online" button, but then I get other errors: Your version of SQL Server 2008 isn't compatible with this version of Windows

I spent the better part of the day to find applicable links and downloads to update SQL 2008 r2 RTM express to add the Advanced Services package and will need the SP1 stand alone package
Fred A 27 Feb 2011 7:14 AM Hi Beth, After running SQL Server SP2 on Windows 7 x64 did it upgrade your SSMS to 10.2.4000.0 or did it leave it at 10.50.1600.1? Both my Win3k3 x32 bit and Vista x32 systems have been upgraded to 10.2.4000.0. Being on the VS team I have a lot of internal builds to install of VS so I am also semi-frequently installing SSMS on the VMs :) Cheers!
