But uninstalling DivX did fix it, and installing the latest Xvid codec made me able to watch any DivX encoded file in WMP 11 again

I think that would pretty much minimize any potential risk --- If you haven't already done so, there are quite a few additional suggestions in the 'Comments' section below the article. If none of them help with the problem, and you wanted to try to Disable Protected Mode, then you might re-enable Protected Mode as soon as you re-boot your system
